I Want to Ride My Bicycle

When trying to figure out what I wanted to do in BA I figured what better way to see the city than by bike. There were two options and as we covered most of the first in yesterday's walking tour we signed up for the Parks of Palermo tour.

We covered some serious ground (duh we were on bikes) and I think hit up all of the parks. At one point we stopped into one of the many memorials of Eva Peron. A local hero and loved by almost everyone he she was known for her work with women and children; in fact one of the most famous laws here is known as Eva' Law which allowed women the right to vote. Her memorial, which is on the spot where her home used to be, makes her appear as if she is bowling (a joke from our tour guide). Instead her back hand is in the shape of a V, which was a symbol of the movement to help the workers of the country.

From there we biked up the one hill of Buenos Aires to get to Ricoleta, one of the most famous cemeteries in the city. Before we were let loose the tour guide brought out some Yerbe Mate, fondly known as mate to the locals, for us to try. Todd is in love with this stuff and drinks it all the time, he made some for me yesterday, and I will say it is a bit too bitter for my taste. This one however was mixed in with some camomile tea which improved the taste dramatically.

After a quick trip to Evita's grave we twisted back through the parks and started to make our way back home. On the way we passed the law school and Floralis Genérica, a giant flower which at one time would open at 0800 and close as the sun was setting. Sadly the mechanism inside is far too expensive for them to fix, so the sculpture remains open.

The rest of the afternoon was spent wandering around some of the barrios close to Todd's house where we worked up enough of an appetite for dinner at one of the local parrillas. As a country known for beef, these grill houses cook their meet for several hours on the grill before serving it either alone or with some chimichuri; either way it was delicious.
