NYE 2012

The one bad part about leaving Florida is that the weather up north is always cold and overcast - this afternoon was no exception.  As I was riding the train back to Baltimore I received a text from the Boys about an impromptu NYE party/birthday celebration for Russell.  After a five minute internal debate (the only con was I had to be on a bus bright and early the next morning for NYC) I hopped in my car and headed south.

The usual shenanigans, and obligatory glow sticks, were to be expected.  One of the greatest sounds in the world, after opening a new can of tennis balls, is cracking a whole bunch of glow sticks at once.

While the twinkle lights and blue rope lights are great for atmosphere, they do make picture taking a little difficult and only a few of the group shots turned out.  Oops.

Tini Sandwich between two Emily's

Russell, our token old guy friend, turned 28 today and was very surprised there was a cake in his honor.

We also took the inaugural 2013 dance video.  I will say the glow sticks really gave it something extra.

I also came across this compilation of tweets which makes me nervous for human kind (and truly wonder about education in this country)!!

That's A Wrap Folks

Well another year has come and gone!  Feel free to rock out to Pop Danthology 2012 as you read some of the big posts of 2013!

And in other exciting new I only have 10 more things to accomplish on my 30 Before 30 list.

Lunch at the Breakers

After a quick round of tennis, the family piled into the car and headed down to Palm Beach to have lunch at The Breakers

Here are some fun historical facts about the hotel:
  • The hotel sits on 140 oceanfront acres in the heart of Palm Beach
  • The original Breakers opened in 1896
  • People asked to stay in rooms "overlooking the breakers" and thus the name
  • In 1903 it burned down, was rebuilt and then reopened in 1904 (it burned down again two decades later)
Everything was still decked out for Christmas!  Very snazzy.

We had lunch overlooking the beach which was great!

The irony of the afternoon is that we were at their seafood restaurant, but all enjoyed burgers.

Cooking Class With Tam

For Christmas Memere, Granddad and Scott all chipped in for a cooking class with the Executive Chef of the Wanderers Club here in Wellington.  Every winter he hosts a couple of class, but sadly it is never over the winter break.

When we showed up we each had a cutting board, knife and apron waiting.  At the end of the table there was a mystery basket of ingredients we would be using throughout the afternoon.

First up were duck spring rolls!  I have never cooked duck before and while I knew you score the top so the breast does not shrink, I did not know you do the same thing when cooking calamari.  Tam lead the way and we all followed his lead.

The duck was seared, covered with some sweet chili sauce and then placed in the oven to finish baking.  SOOO GOOD!!

Everyone was busy chopping vegetables (carrots, cucumbers and avocado) while the duck rested.  Lynn was pleased with her avocado slicing.

With everything chopped and ready to go, the rolling began

Rice paper, rice noodles, duck, mango chutney, veggies, mint, cilantro!  How easy is that?!?

We learned how to make Lynn's favorite green beans and then on to the second appetizer - caramelized pears, brie, Boursin, sun dried tomatoes on a baguette.  First step cut up the pears, cook them over high heat with butter, pepper and a bit of salt until they are caramelized.

Toast the baguette, spread some Boursin cheese, add the tomatoes, layer on some the pears and top with the brie.  If that doesn't sound good you then put it in the oven for a few minutes to melt the cheese.  I can definitely see eating this in the future!!  Before and after pictures below.

While we did not get to make dessert the pastry chef pulled some stuff out of the fridge so we could enjoy cheesecake pops and some white mousse and pistachio tarts.  AHHHH!!

Merry Christmas From Me and Mine to You and Yours

Well we got up bright and early  Thankfully we are all older and can sleep in before opening presents.  As per usual we have some kind of Christmas bush/pant instead of a tree.  Once upon a time Memere bought a tree right out of a store window (lights and ornaments and all), but sadly it was lost in the last move a few years ago.

This Christmas I was on a budget so I ended up making a lot of gifts!  The first rendition should have ended up on the Pinterest You Are Drunk blog.  Thankfully the second one worked out much better!!!

Elise was ready and waiting to hand out presents.

Uncle Scott gave all the ladies an apron for our upcoming cooking lesson at the Club tomorrow (pictures and stories of course to come).  Elise was excited that she got an apron with cooking techniques and conversions.

The information was written upside down which would make it easy to reference.

After presents and drinks, we gathered around the table for dinner late lunch.

I will say one of the best gifts of the day could be finding out that The West Wing is now on instant Netflix!!!

A Few Merry Christmas LOLs!!

Well I hope Santa was good to you all, you have eaten a great Christmas morning casserole and are enjoying those Christmas tunes.  Need a quick break from the family chaos check out these Christmas cartoons!

Have even more time on your hands (or need to escape)?  Check out these ugly sweaters!!

Sunday Things!

One of the great things about heading to Wellington year after year is you got to the same places and see the same people - same serves at the restaurant, same friends of my grandparents, etc.

Sundays are no different as we head into Palm Beach for brunch.
We stopped for a photo - can you say clash much?

The afternoon was spent making spaghetti, meatballs and sauce!!

Doubles Champ!

So every year when I come down to Florida I usually have a day or two on the tennis court and then jump head into the holiday mixed doubles tournament.  Sadly my usual partner was not in town this weekend, but I had a truly old school Irish gentleman instead.  Dennis and I did quite well and came home victorious of our division with a split bottle of Veuve Clicquot!  Not too shabby!!

Up Up and Away

Yesterday I, along with hundreds of other passengers and half of the Naval Academy, were grounded at the Baltimore Airport as we were all enveloped in some pretty dense fog.

Many of the boards looked like this - delays were turned into cancellations

Lots of long lines as people tried to pass the time until their new flights took off or get booked on new ones.

After a very early wake up call (4015)

a bus ride, a train and two flights I finally arrived at PBI!

Crazy Christmas Decorations

The other way when out for a run I came across a street with some crazy Christmas decorations.  This street spared no expense and went all out.  Here are a couple pictures.

The Holidays Have Begun!

With finals finished I headed down to DC to get a jump start on my holiday season.  I was greeted by this lovely Christmas tree as soon as I walked into the Boy's house.  The best part is I got to sleep on the futon next to the tree - nothing better than the smell of a pine tree.

Then it was off to our Hanukkah/Secret Santa party.  For most of us it was the first time we had ever lit a menorah. We ate some latkes, played the dradle game and jammed out to some holiday tunes.

Emily and Erica also surprised Tini with some birthday cake.

Saturday was a day of birthday celebrations!  First it was off to El Centro to celebrate Liana's 26th.  Dinner, and the company, were to die for.

Then it was across town for the second soiree of the evening - Christine's 25th.  The Jersey Crew (minus Matt because he was taking the picture) and lone New Yorker (that would be me) were reunited and dance the night away.

New Test of Strength and Will

So a few years ago a dear friend of mine convinced me that I should sign up and run the San Jose Rock and Roll half marathon with him.  Now dear reader I have never been a true lover of long distance any kind of running - it was something I did as a part of sports and I just got through it.  I ran my first 10 mile run in DC during the Cherry Blossom Festival, and for some reason the miles just flew by; I could see what all the big fuss was about.

Peter and I completed the run (he fared way better than I did as I completely bonked at mile 10) and I vowed that I would do another one without a walking break.

Well the time has come and three months from today several Bike and Build friends and I will be hitting the pavement to complete the DC Rock and Roll half and full marathons
