This is the week that a Cory Booker, Mayor of Newark, and many people in the Twittersphere will be participating in the #SNAPchallenge. Tomorrow he, and several other Americans will be eating from the meager budget of $31.00 a week or about $1.40 a meal. It will definitely be an eyeopening experience for many citizens whether they are doing the challenge for the first time themselves or following the various tweets and blog posts which will be coming out over the next few days! Knowing from personal experience living on a SNAP food budget is HARD (and I even supplemented my small budget from my living stipend)! Check back in a few days to read about my food stamp experience last year and other clips about how food policy impacts our everyday lives. For now everyone seems to be extremely excited about their vegetarian chili lunches, but we will have to see how things progress over the next seven days as budgets get tighter and foods choices become more limited.
Looks like Cory will be eating a lot of pink beans and corn this week (receipt to the left)!
